About image cropping

A photography composition guide. The grid lines divide your image into thirds horizontally and vertically — placing your subject on those lines (or at the intersections) generally creates more dynamic, balanced compositions than centering everything. Our crop tool shows the grid by default so you can compose intentionally as you drag.
1:1 (square) for Instagram posts, profile pictures, album art. 4:5 (portrait) for Instagram portrait posts — takes up more screen space in feeds. 9:16 (tall) for Instagram Stories, Reels, TikTok. 16:9 (wide) for YouTube thumbnails, presentations, monitors. 3:2 matches most DSLR sensor outputs. 21:9 (cinema) for an ultrawide cinematic look.
Cropping itself is lossless — we just remove pixels outside the crop box, the remaining pixels stay identical. You may lose quality on re-encoding if you're saving as a lossy format (JPG, WebP), but the crop operation itself preserves every kept pixel exactly.
When you rotate or flip the image, the crop region resets to fit the new orientation. This keeps the crop box predictable and prevents accidental "weird angle" crops. If you need rotation-aware cropping (skewed crops at arbitrary angles), that's coming in a future version — let us know if it's important to you.
